FM22 : MILLWALL FC (Part 6)

Millwall FC Part 6

Welcome to the latest blog post covering my time on FM22 managing Millwall FC. After a top 6 finish last season the supporters expectations had rose. I had made up my mind that this would be the last of my FM22 blog posts but I will be back for the release of Football Manager 2023 with a save that will take me back to Italy.

Millwall FC

The board had been pleased with our top 6 finish last season however expectation for the forthcoming season was to achieve a mid table finish which was a fair assessment of the club’s status. We lost the services of Sheyi Ojo, Oliver Burke, David Ballard, Benik Afobe and Luke Freeman who all returned to their parent clubs.

The financial side of the club with a debt of over £80m obviously impacted the boards budgets but with a little planning and hard work we would give it our best shot.

We kicked the season off with a 3-1 win at The Den against Birmingham City with Tottenham loanee Troy Parrott grabbing a brace on his debut with Jed Wallace getting a goal and an assist. We followed this up with a defeat in the Carabao Cup against Exeter City but got back to winning ways against Coventry City before a string of defeats that left us and more so myself scratching my head and struggling to put a finger on our lack of form. It wasn’t that fact that we were not scoring goals it was simply that we were conceding more than we were scoring,

Unfortunately we never looked defensively solid throughout the season but we continued to score goals at the other end with Jed Wallace finishing the season with an impressive 28 goals with Troy Parrott just 3 behind with 25. Jed Wallace also made 15 assists to win the Player Of The Season Award.

Squad Statistics 2022-2023

We rallied to a 10th place finish thanks to the goals of Wallace and Parrott in a season that was more enjoyable to manage than last year but I feel that my tactical decisions had more than a negative effect rather than a positive one has I seemed to lose direction in my decision making.

EFL Championship Table 2022-2023

With the season over I am taking some time to evaluate both my own and ths clubs position and none the less the tactical system that I will be implementing if I decide to continue at The Den. At the moment I am 60/40 in favour of staying at Millwall but will take the time to see what my options are after a season that has drained me (FM Fatigue). If I stay at The club the close season is going to be a very busy one with players coming and going with a definite rebuild on the cards. I will most definitely be looking to extend Troy Parrott’s loan whilst looking to add more quality to the squad. There are a number of players who our scouting network have flagged up who are out of contract this summer who I believe can improve the quality of the first team squad. I would like to thank you for reading and following this blog and look forward to the next one.
