FM22 : IPSWICH TOWN FC (4)

Season 2023-2024

  • EFL Championship Champions
  • FA Cup 5th Round
  • Carabao Cup 4th Round

Welcome come to my latest blog post that covers my 3rd season in charge of Ipswich Town. Last season we finished 5th in the Championship qualifying for the playoffs which we lost against Watford in the Semi Finals. This season was a different story with us going on to be crowned Champions.

I have decided to keep my season reviews short and concise instead of babbling on and then release more blog posts with more detail covering tactics, players, training, intakes, youth teams and youth development. I plan to cover subjects like the aforementioned probably once or twice a month whilst releasing season reviews has and when the season’s end. The first of the features blogs will come in March.

EFL Championship 2023-2024 Table

It was a season to remember for the Tractor Boys and their fans gaining promotion to the Premier League along with AFC Bournemouth who finished second and Watford who won the Playoff Final against Cardiff City.

I did not make any signings during the season instead I put faith in the squad that took us to a 5th placed finish last season. I stood by the 433 formation that we had adopted in season 1 in the EFL League One.

Connor Chaplin finished the season as our top goalscorer with 18 goals closely followed by fellow forward Joe Pigott with 17. Left back Matt Penney led the way with assists creating 19 goals followed by winger Kyle Edwards on 11.

Our biggest victory came when Peterborough United visited Portman Road and left hours later on the receiving end of a 6-1 thrashing. AFC Bournemouth inflicted our heaviest defeat with a 4-0 victory.

Our success this season was built on a solid back four of Kane Vincent Young, George Edmundson, Lake Woolfenden and Matt Penney. George Edmundon was voted the clubs player of the year by the fans.

Best XI

At the beginning of the save I set a target of replicating Bobby Robson in bringing both the FA Cup and Uefa Cup (now the Europa League). This is still my goal having turned down opportunities to speak to both PSV Eindoven and Napoli after being invited to attend a meeting at both clubs.

Arsenal knocked us out of the FA Cup whilst Brentford were responsible for our exit in the Carabao Cup.

Squad Statistics 2023-2024

Next season in the Premier League I am going to experiment using a 3 at the back formation before switching back to our 433 the following season whether it be in the Premier League or EFL Championship. The reason for this is just to change things up a bit as we fight to meet the boards expectation of fighting bravely against relegation. Promotion to the Premier League will bring some much needed financial injection which hopefully the board agree to upgrade our Youth Recruitment, Junior Coaching and the facilities. Our participation in next season’s Premier League will be one of stability, my plan is to take the club in to the European places by the end of season 6 of the save which will be the 2026-2027 season.
