People of a certain vintage will remember the Bobby Robson led Ipswich Town winning the UEFA Cup in the early 80’s.

Robson led Ipswich to two major trophies and several seasons in top flight European football. The successful period began in 1973 when the club won the Texaco Cup and finished fourth in the league, qualifying for the UEFA Cup for the first time. In the 1974–75 season they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time, losing to West Ham United after a replay, and finished third in the league. By the late 1970s, Robson had built a strong side with talent in every department, introducing the Dutch pair Arnold Mühren and Frans Thijssen to add flair to a team that featured British internationals including John Wark, Terry Butcher and Paul Mariner, although the Ipswich squad perhaps lacked the depth of established big clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United. Ipswich regularly featured in the top five of the league and in the UEFA Cup. At their peak in the 1979–80 season, they beat Manchester United 6–0 in a league game at Portman Road, a game where United goalkeeper Gary Bailey also saved three penalties. The defeat cost United two points – the margin which eventually separated them and champions Liverpool. Major success came in 1978 when Ipswich beat Arsenal at Wembley Stadium to win their only FA Cup trophy. The triumph was followed by a UEFA Cup victory in 1981 with a 5–4 victory over AZ Alkmaar in the two-legged final. The run to the final included a 4–1 win at St Etienne, captained by Michel Platini. The club also finished as league runners-up in 1981 and 1982

Today Ipswich Town find themselves in the Third tier of the English game in the EFL League , a million miles away from their golden years under Sir Bobby.

My Aim FOR FM22

The number one goal of my FM22 save is to achieve European succes with the club from Suffolk and look to match the honours won by Sir Bobby Robson during his time with the Tractor Boys.

  • UEFA Cup: 1980–81
  • FA Cup: 1977–78
  • National Fives Tournament: 1977
  • Texaco Cup: 1972–73

Now obviously the National Fives and Texaco Cup can not be won so for the sake of this challenge I have to win two different competitions so for example winning the EFL League One, EFL Championship, Carabao Cup, Papa John’s Trophy or any other of the English or European honours.

Robson also achieved this feat by bringing through players from the youth ranks whilst keeping incoming transfers to a minimum only bringing in players if there was no available talent to promote from within the club.

What Robson did do though was to sign the Dutch pair Arnold Mühren and Frans Thijssen who along with the talented Mick Mills, Eric Gates, John Wark, Paul Matiner. Paul Cooper, Alan Brazil, Kevin Beattie and Russell Osman to name a few.

So I have decided that to go along with the challenge of winning the Uefa Cup now known as the Europa League I need to do it with 2 influential Dutch players in the squad.

Club Culture And Vision

We are expected to play an attacking brand of football whilst working within the wage budget. The board would also like us to look at developing our own players so this fits nicely with the Bobby Robson era.

The board are looking for us to reach the EFL League One Playoffs this season whilst reaching the 4th round of both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Next season we will be expected to get promotion to the EFL Championship and then maintain our status of being a Championship club for the next 3 seasons.

Final Words

So with Ipswich Town being the save that I will write about with the aim of achieving what Bobby Robson achieved in his time at Portman Road I have also made the decision if time allows once or if the above is achieved I will try and apply for the England job at the end of the save and try and take them to the World Cup Finals before trying to take over the managerial role at PSV Eindoven. All this does depend on how long the save takes ect before the end of the FM22 cycle. I have in my mind 3 formations that I will look to be implementing at some point during the save in a hope that I can take Ipswich back to former glories meaning European nights in Suffolk. For anyone who is visiting this website for the first time you can find my previous FM saves in order on the home page starting from FM19 with Fiorentina continuing to FM20 with Torquay United and then finally to FM21 were I did a multiple club save with TSV MÜNCHEN 1860, Willem II and Aston Villa.

If for any reason I get sacked at any point in the save I will continue the save and apply for any available jobs to continue until the end of FM22.

Thank You for taking the time to check this post out and hopefully you will be back soon to see how my time in Suffolk pans out.
